It’s coming right up, back to school time when kids will be hungry after school. Smoothies are an easy and tasty way to satisfy hunger pangs and tide them over until dinner. Little ones can help by putting ingredients in the blender and pushing the power button.

Use whatever fruit you have on hand frozen or fresh (especially bananas), some kind of liquid such as milk or non-dairy milk, yogurt (dairy or vegan), and any kind of add-ins you want, such as nut butter, natural sweeteners, chia or hemp seeds, protein powder, etc. for extra nutrition. An ice cube is nice too for a chilled smoothie. Try to keep frozen bananas handy. Experiment and see what combinations your kids like best.

1 orange, peeled, chopped
1 banana, sliced, frozen
1/2 cup milk of your choice
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt

Toss all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Makes 2 small servings.

Strawberry Spinach

1/2 cup strawberries, sliced, frozen
1 small banana
1/2 cup packed fresh spinach
1 cup coconut milk
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Makes 2 small servings.

Blueberry Goji

1/2 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
1/4 cup goji berries, soaked for a few minutes in warm water, drained
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup coconut milk
3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
1 banana, sliced, frozen

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Makes 2 small servings.

Mango Avocado

1 mango, peeled, cubed
1/2 a ripe avocado
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup milk of your choice

Blend everything until smooth and creamy. Makes 2 small servings.

Peanut Butter Banana Chia

1 banana, sliced, frozen
2 tablespoons smooth peanut butter
2 tablespoons honey
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup yogurt
pinch cinnamon
1 teaspoon chia seeds

Blend everything until smooth. Makes 2 small servings.
