Fry Bread

  in Breads, Recipes

Fry bread is great for making tacos, or for a sweet treatment, smear with butter and drizzle with honey, or sprinkle with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar when it’s hot out of the pan.

1 cup all purpose flour + extra for dusting
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/3 cup hot water
vegetable oil for frying

  1. Mix the flour, baking soda and salt together in medium bowl. Add the hot water and stir until it forms a loose dough and all the flour is incorporated. Cover and let sit for 30 minutes.
  2. Dust a work surface with a little flour. Dump the dough onto the floured surface and lightly knead and smooth out into a thick disc. Cut the disc in half, roll the halves into balls and roll out the balls into 8-9 inch circles.
  3. Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a 10 inch heavy skillet over medium high heat. When oil is shimmering, carefully place one dough piece into the oil. Fry until golden, about 60-90 seconds. Flip and cook the other side until golden. If bubbles form, poke a hole in the bubbles and flatten with a metal spatula. Drain breads on a paper towel-lined plate. Enjoy while warm.
