September 20, 2010 - Oryana Seeks Local Non-Profit for Community Grant

TRAVERSE CITY, MICH., SEPTEMBER 20, 2010—For the third straight year, Oryana Natural Foods Market—a non-profit cooperative owned by thousands of area residents—will make a significant donation to a worthy non-profit.

Oryana currently seeks applications from local non-profit organizations for the Oryana Community Grant Program. Every profitable year, Oryana donates up to 10 percent of all end-of-year proceeds (pre-tax) to a local non-profit organization.

“Cooperatives work for the sustainable development of communities,” says Sandi McArthur, Oryana Education and Outreach Coordinator. “We are excited about this program, which gives us and our members a chance to formalize our practice of giving back.”

Applicants must be a 501(c)(3) based in one of the following counties: Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, Wexford.

Special consideration will be given to organizations that are in agreement with the Oryana Ends, which are policies that define the desired Oryana organizational vision. The six issues these policies cover are economy, localism, wellness, education, community, and model workplace.

To download an application, visit www.oryana.coop/coop-info.html and click the link titled “Oryana Community Grant Program Application.” (Also available within “Featured Links” on the Oryana homepage.)

Applications can be submitted via mail to Oryana Natural Foods Market, 260 E. 10th St., Traverse City, MI 49684, Attention: Sandi. To submit electronically, email sandi@oryana.coop or luise@oryana.coop. The deadline is December 1, 2010.

Oryana members will have the opportunity to vote (one member, one vote) via ballot box in the store for the organization of their choice. The grant recipient will be announced at the General Membership Meeting in April 2011.
