August 20, 2010 - Oryana Continues Local Baker's Delicious Legacy
TRAVERSE CITY, MICH., AUGUST 20, 2010—Loyal fans of recently retired local baker Neill “Papa Doc” Varner’s bagels can rest easy. He recently passed the torch to Oryana Natural Foods Market, who will soon make the tasty treats using Varner’s own special recipe and techniques that make the PapaDoc Bagel like no other.
“People were upset,” Varner says of his retirement. “They begged me to reconsider, or at least do special orders for them.”
Originally, Varner baked 14 varieties of bagels; Oryana is going to continue producing the seven most popular flavors. Bagels will be available individually and in packs of four.
Commenting on the new arrangement with Oryana, Varner says, “I’m thrilled that my grandson will still be able to enjoy PapaDoc bagels as he grows up.”
Starting September 1, Oryana is making two or three varieties each day for customers to enjoy fresh from the oven and then vote on their favorite type. Once the “bagel ballots” have been counted, the top seven bagel varieties will be regularly made in the bakery.
Customers are invited to vote on the following varieties: Cheese, Jalapeno, Everything, Plain, Salt, Cinnamon Raisin, Cherry, Blueberry, Sesame, Poppyseed, Onion, Onion-Garlic, Fennel and Honey Wheat.
The bagels and “bagel ballots” will be available at Oryana, located at 260 E. Tenth Street in Traverse City.
