The Redheads

The Redheads

You never know how your business might evolve. That’s what sisters and Leelanau county natives Christen and Sarah, aka the Redheads, learned about their Lake Leelanau restaurant, Kejara’s Bridge. The pair started the restaurant in 1997. Fast forward to 2003 after loyal customers encouraged them to package and sell their tasty creations to be enjoyed at home and the sisters started a new business, calling it the Redheads, a nod to their respective scarlet locks.

They started with their famous hummus and now produce a wide variety of delicious products including dressings, sauces, granola, vegetarian burgers, and fruit/nut snack mix. All their products are made with organic, natural, whole food ingredients.

The restaurant closed for two years so they could concentrate on their product line but opened again as The Redheads Cafe and Tasting Room with Christen as manager.

All the products are made at the cafe and shipped to outlets all over Michigan and Kroger stores in Indiana.
Much has changed in Sarah’s life since she first opened Kejara’s Bridge; she is now married and has two children. And life is not slowing down. The pair opened the Lil Leland Café inside Leelanau Books in Leland and continue to expand their line of products. “We are of the mind that if you aren’t moving forward, then you are essentially moving backwards in this business,” says Sarah.

What’s coming up? New sauces such as Righteous Romescu, Tasty Tahini, and Presto Pesto as well as Spinach Filo Wraps.

Developing products that support the local economy, taste good and are good for you has been rewarding for Sarah and Christen. Running your own business has its challenges too. “It is very time consuming and juggling the time with family can get tricky,” says Sarah. “Having a great husband, great kids, and great family and friends to help has been beyond helpful.”
