Leelanau Cheese in Suttons Bay, founded by John and Anne Hoyt, produces traditional European-style cheeses from cow’s milk obtained in Leelanau County. They make Fromage Blanc, a fresh creamy cheese spread and Raclette, a semi-hard Swiss cheese with a buttery, nutty flavor.

John studied cheese making at the Chateauneuf School of Agriculture in Switzerland.  He was a cheesemaker at Eison, where he met Anne who had worked extensively with goats and goat cheese. After several years of cheesemaking together in Europe, they came to Michigan, John’s home, and established Leelanau Cheese in 1995.

This year they produced 37,000 pounds of cheese and have four employees. What Anne enjoys most about their business is when customers who have been buying their products for 20 years tells them they are doing something right. What she finds challenging is dealing with the milk quality and the intense labor of artisan cheesemaking.

They moved to their current and final location south of Suttons Bay two years ago. They recently installed solar panels and now the cheese production will be powered by solar energy. Leelanau Solar installed a system of mounted arrays with seasonal adjustable tilt, providing 80 to 100% of the company’s power needs. www.leelanaucheese.com
