Whole Foods Sells Out to Monsanto

September 6, 2011, 4:09 pm

It is a sad, sad day. What seemed like an uphill battle has now become practically an insurmountable cliff. Whole Foods, Stonyfield Farm, and Organic Valley, all big players in the voice of organics, have sold out to Monsanto and agreed that “The policy set for GE alfalfa will most likely guide policies for other GE crops as well. True coexistence is a must.” This shocking quote by Whole Foods exemplifies the betrayal from a corporation that started out with high ideals and, like so many other corporations, decided that profit above all else is the ultimate bottom line, even at the expense of ALL organic farms and the future well-being of the planet.

It doesn’t require much more than common sense to realize that GE alfalfa, and the avalanche of other GE crops that are sure to follow, will drift and contaminate pure, organic strains, thereby permanently destroying the integrity of these crops. The secretary of the USDA, Monsanto-friendly Tom Vilsack is spearheading the effort to deregulate the planting of GE. It is a powerless feeling indeed to know that the highest levels of government are putting the profits of one corporation above the well-being of the people.

Ronnie Cummins explains the whole thing well in his post in organicconsumers.org. You can read it here.
