Most everyone knows that pesticides have been linked to a variety of health concerns including nervous system disorders, carcinogenic effects, hormone system disruption, and skin, eye and lung irritation. Children are especially sensitive to pesticide exposure. When you buy organic products, you not only ensure that the food you eat and feed your family is free of harmful chemicals, you also support farmers who are working hard to grow food in an environmentally friendly way.

The Environmental Working Group compiles a yearly list of foods with the highest levels of pesticide contamination as well those with the least. Check out which foods you definitely want to avoid if you cannot purchase them organically, but ideally, organic is the way to go.

The Dirty Dozen - Most Contaminated Fruits and Veggies

  1. Apples
  2. Celery
  3. Sweet bell peppers
  4. Peaches
  5. Strawberries
  6. Nectarines – Imported
  7. Grapes
  8. Spinach
  9. Lettuce
  10. Cucumbers
  11. Blueberries – domestic
  12. Potatoes

Kale/greens - commonly contaminated with toxic organophosphate insecticides

Commodity crop corn used for animal feed and biofuels is almost all produced with genetically modified (GMO) seeds, and now some sweet corn is being sold for human consumption, particularly by Walmart. Since GMO sweet corn is not labeled as such in US stores, it’s best to buy organic sweet corn.

The cleanest, lowest in pesticides:

  3. Pinapples
  4. Avocado
  5. Cabbage
  6. Sweet peas
  7. Asparagus
  8. Mangoes
  9. Eggplant
  10. Kiwi
  11. Cantaloupe-domestic
  12. Sweet potatoes
  13. Grapefruit
  14. Watermelon
  15. Mushrooms
