Shop Locally-Made Products This Year

December 1, 2011, 12:00 am

ABC Nightly News recently ran a series called "Made in America," where it talked about how the majority of our holiday gifts were made outside the U.S., primarily in China. According to the story, the average American will spend about $700 on holiday gifts this year, totaling more than $465 billion. The article further postulates that if every one spent just $64 on American-made goods during our holiday shopping, the result would be 200,000 new jobs. There is a map of the U.S. where you can click on each state to find what companies are making goods. In Michigan it lists 35 companies producing gift-worthy goods. But of course there are many more than that.

Our store sells products from dozens of local producers, from wine to chocolate, coffee, cleaning products, soap, and candles to brooms. Yes, brooms. Made by local artisan and furniture maker, Jim Rantala, creator and owner of Windsor Woodworks. Rantala makes lovely Windsor-style chairs and furniture in addition to hand-made brooms. His is just one of many talented, ambitious local businesses that showcase our region's creativity and bounty.

Of course many of the local products we carry are food products, but who doesn't love food as a gift? And who couldn't use a luscious bar of delicately scented soap made right in Traverse City, or enjoy a dollop of honey made by bees flying around Benzie County? If all of us pledged to purchase at least some locally-made products this Christmas, it would be a huge boost for our area and keep those local dollars flowing, instead of sending them to banks in New York or Hong Kong.

Here is a short list of local companies selling their products in our store:

The Redheads
Nature's Magic Skin Care
Black Star Farms
Little Terror Hot Sauce
Light of Day Organics
Leelanau Cheese
Naturally Nutty
Bay Bread
Higher Grounds
Great Northern Roasting
Fishcreek Soapworks
Food for Thought
Champion Hill Farm
Grocer's Daughter Chocolate

Please keep your local producers in mind for your gift shopping this month and have a fantastic holiday season!

There's a great company down in Ohio that's a good source for jeans, shorts, t-shirts, socks, etc., that are not only American made, but in many cases union made:

I've been getting my jeans from them for several years, good stuff, great customer service, and really quick turnaround on exchanges. Pretty good operation, thought I'd pass it along.
