Member Linkage

February 15, 2013, 11:47 am

by Amy Tennis, President, Oryana Board of Directors

February 12  was the kick-off of our newest method of collecting member feedback:  a dinner date!  Member linkage is the term we Board members call connecting with the members to get a finger on the pulse of membership needs, wants, and impressions of Oryana.  Members were randomly selected for this opportunity to be sure we are gaining a broad perspective.

We gathered at the Circuit in Traverse City to enjoy a great Oryana catered meal (still thinking about the delicious blushing pears) and to take part in a facilitated discussion.  Woody Smith, of Avenue ISR, who is instrumental in all things marketing at Oryana, led our brainstorming session.  The main question we were interested in exploring was:  Because of Oryana, our community is (fill in the blank).

What did we learn?  My biggest takeaway is that we could be doing a much better job communicating to our membership and the public at large, all of the things Oryana does in addition to being a great resource for local and nutritious food, expertise on food allergies and special diets, carefully researched cosmetics, hair and body care items, a place to recycle batteries, and quaff an expertly made latte.  Did you know that we are also involved in outreach to schools, conduct educational classes, make food donations, provide financial support for worthy causes, are a model workplace, and sponsor local events?

Pat on our own back?  Self-aggrandizement?  Emphatically, I say “no!”  Long ago, the members provided feedback to the Board that resulted in the Ends statements.  The Ends are the guiding principles or outcomes that we as members decided we wanted to achieve with our cooperative venture.  We are knocking it out of the park, but many of us don’t even realize it.  Thank you, members, for the wakeup call.  It’s time for us to blow our own horn and celebrate everything our community is because of Oryana!
