Just Label It

December 20, 2011, 3:12 pm

Under current FDA regulations, there is no mandate that requires labeling of genetically engineered foods. We are informed of what kinds of fats and how many calories are in foods but we don't have that kind of information when it comes to GE ingredients in the foods we purchase. Labeling is essential for us to decide whether or not we choose to consume genetically engineered foods. We have a right to know about the food we eat and what we feed our families.

Genetically engineered foods are required to be labeled in 15 European Union nations, Russia, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries around the world. We need to be able to make informed choices about the food we eat just like the citizens of the above countries.

A recent poll released by ABC News found that 93 percent of the American public wants the federal government to require mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. As ABC News stated, "Such near-unanimity in public opinion is rare."

President Obama made a campaign promise to require labeling of GE foods but he has yet to make good on his promise.  With only one year left of his current term and other problems on his mind like the economy, it seems doubtful he’ll take any action.

A legal petition calling for the mandatory labeling of GE foods, written by attorneys at the Center for Food Safety, was submitted in September to the FDA. The FDA will take public comments on the petition. The FDA carefully considers official comments from the public when drawing upon a final ruling.

Please go to Just Label It and add your comments to the petition. So far more than 400,000 people have commented on the issue.

Watch this short video that makes the point about why we need to know what we are eating:
