Drinking Enough Water

May 30, 2012, 3:05 pm

With warm weather finally descending on us and the urge to spend more time outdoors, it’s a good idea to remember to always have some drinking water on hand.

The need to stay hydrated cannot be underestimated. Water keeps the whole body working well; every single process depends on adequate water. It helps the body flush wastes and stay at the right temperature. It can help prevent kidney stones and constipation. It’s helpful for weight loss, can reduce incidence of headaches, has been shown to lower the risk of heart attacks, and helps skin stay supple, among many other benefits.

We lose water all the time through simply breathing, as well as through sweating, urinating, and bowel movements. And during summer we lose even more fluids. All this lost fluid has to be replaced in order to stay healthy. If we don’t get enough water, dehydration sets in, which can be dangerous. Go for three days without replenishing fluids and you will die!

Fortunately, all liquids help us stay hydrated. Filtered or pure spring water is the best choice. But most of us can get enough fluid through the beverages we drink every day including water, juices, coffee, sodas, tea, etc. Food is also a source of water. Some fruits and vegetables like melons and lettuce contain a lot of water.

To ensure that you’re getting enough water, always have it with you. Get a reusable bottle at Oryana – we have several no-BPA styles and sizes – and keep it filled. And if you’re working at a desk, always have a glass or bottle of water on hand. In the summer months, I throw a bottle in the freezer and freeze it partially so I have an ice-cold source of fluids for awhile.

One rule of thumb to keep in mind if you’re not sure if you’re getting enough water is to check the color of your urine. If it’s light colored, you’re probably getting enough. If it’s very dark, you’re probably not.
