A Message Regarding Recent Events in the U.S.

November 18, 2016, 12:00 am

Oryana’s mission is to provide high quality food produced in ecologically sound ways at fair value to owners and the community. Oryana owners and staff are committed to enhancing our community through the practice of cooperative economics and education about the relationship of food to health. We are a passionate community working together for sustainability, progressive land and animal stewardship, human rights, social and economic justice.

Our mission statement, our ENDS policies (high level goals), and the 7 cooperative principles define what we are constantly working toward at Oryana. It informs all our work here, from the products we carry to the events we hold and sponsor. It defines the way we interact with our staff, owners and customers, and is the basis for the relationships we cultivate with farmers, food producers, and other vendors.

Recent events have distressed many of our co-op community, staff, owners, and customers alike. We've heard and read about people who are worried for their own safety and that of others in their community. We've heard hurt over the division of our country and our communities. We've heard outrage, confusion, and regret.

We at Oryana recognize that our community is diverse and that that is what makes it so amazingly vibrant and interesting. We work hard to make everyone feel safe and want to take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to our mission, goals and values. We'll continue to passionately uphold our ideals as we continue the day-to-day business of running a food co-op, with our owners and customers at our side. We'll continue to support inclusiveness, social justice, and educate everyone about the relationship between good food and good health.

Food has always been a means of bringing people together; it’s a common ground that allows people to open the door to communication and cooperation. With the holidays upon us, we hope that you will be able to find or create welcoming spaces to gather and share together; to build community.

We also would like to share how thankful we are for our relationships with our local farmers, producers and vendors who provide the highest quality products in the region. Our commitment to providing you and our community with local organic produce, humanely raised meats, and many other wonderful products is unwavering and could not be achieved without their incredible work.

Thanks for being a part of our co-op community and the community at large, and for helping us remain true to our mission, goals and values.
