Recipe of the Week
This is deceptively simple and a delicious, quick side dish that goes well with teriyaki chicken, tofu, tempeh or other Asian dish.
Broccoli with Sesame Dressing
1/2 pound broccoli, chopped
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 tablespoon tamari
1 ½ teaspoons natural cane sugar
Heat a small skillet over low heat and toast the sesame seeds, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Be careful not to burn.
Grind the toasted sesame seeds in a suribachi bowl or use a coffee grinder.
Combine sesame seeds, tamari, and sugar in a large bowl. Add a tiny amount of water if it’s too thick. Boil or steam the broccoli until tender crisp. Add the broccoli to the prepared dressing. Toss well. Serve immediately.
*A suribachi is the Japanese version of a mortar and pestle. It consists of a pottery bowl glazed on the outside. The inside of the bowl has a ridged pattern to facilitate grinding. It‘s used with a wooden pestle called a surikogi.
