Holiday Stress Relief

The holidays are a time for feeling jolly and carefree, but the season can also leave you feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Here are a few products that can help smooth over your holiday rough spots.

The dairy case is overflowing with several brands of creamy eggnog including Organic Valley, Shetlers (clove-spiced custard in a cup heaven!), Kalona SuperNatural, So Delicious Coconut Eggnog, and Earth Balance Soy Nog

Eating chocolate may lower levels of stress hormones so eat up! Try Theo organic, fair trade holiday flavors of peppermint stick, salted toffee,  nutcracker brittle, and gingerbread spice. Also local Grocer's Daughter Bluebar and Honey Caramel Turtle.

Numerous herbs are excellent for calming frayed nerves. Try Organic India's Ashwagandha or Gaia's Holy Basil Leaf, both excellent for stress relief.

How about a soothing, hot cup of Yogi Kava Stress Relief or Traditonal Medicinals Easy Now with chamomile and lavender.

We recommend Rescue Remedy, the most popular Bach Flower Essence, and  the spray is our favorite, although you can also get it in a gum, drops, pastilles, or cream. Also try Natural Calm, an anti-stress drink mix or Calm Aid by Nature's Way.

Beer & Wine!

Chateau Chantal Malbec and Silver Birch Sauvignon Blanc are Eldon, our store manager's picks. Also try hard cider from local Northern Natural Organic in cherry apple, traditional, and blueberry apple. For beer, Sierra Nevada Celebration is a fresh hop ale and seasonal product.

Mandel Halbmonde (Almond Crescents)

Here is a delightful cookie recipe from Germany that features almonds. Nuts are a common flavorful ingredient in German cookies and these might become a favorite.

2 sticks butter, room temperature
2/3 cup natural cane sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
2 1/2 cups unbleached flour
1 cup finely ground almonds
confectioner’s sugar

Heat oven to 350°F. Cream the butter and sugar together. Add extracts. Add flour and almonds and mix thoroughly.

Take tablespoons of dough and roll into a small balls, about an inch in diameter, then shape into a crescent. Place onto greased cookie sheet and bake for 12 - 15 minutes or until a light golden brown. While warm, roll crescents in confectioners’ sugar. Cool on racks and store in a tightly sealed container. Makes 3 dozen.

For chocolate lovers, let the cookies cool (do not roll in confectioner's sugar) and dip one end into melted chocolate and let cool until chocolate is hard.
